Matthew 12:46–50: “While Jesus was still speaking to the crowd, His mother and brothers came and stood outside, asking to speak to Him. Someone told Him, ‘Look, Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside wanting to speak to You.’ To the one who had said this, Jesus replied, ‘Who is My mother and who are My brothers?’ And pointing toward His disciples, He said, ‘Here are My mother and My brothers. For whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother.’”
Jesus Christ is clearly redefining family relationship here. He is saying it is more than what is natural. Now He wants to talk to you about what is spiritual.
What is a spiritual connection? When you look at Israel, you find that you can say these are relatives: one tribe is from the same father, from the same ancestor. So when you trace it back, they are all relatives. There is a natural affinity. But He is talking about a different kind of affinity, something spiritual, something that has to do with the fact that you are now born again, the fact that you are a different kind of person now—a kind of connection that is even beyond what you see with your physical eyes.
In a way, Jesus Christ is taking from what we know, what we understand in the natural landscape, and applying it to the spiritual—saying, “You need a different kind of eyes to recognize your brother, your sister. You need a different kind of perspective. You need to come to My own angle and see what I value.”
What is He valuing? He is telling you, “I am not so much valuing what you people are valuing. I am not so much valuing what comes naturally. I value something else. I value who does the will of My Father.”
So it does not matter where you are coming from, which country you have been born in—Jesus Christ calls you His brother, His sister, once you do the will of the Father. That means He wants to be with you. That means you share the same aim; you are going in the same direction. Because He Himself is committed to doing the will of the Father (John 4:34; John 6:38).
So when you are committed to doing the will of the Father, once you become a Christian, you become His brother, you become His sister. You come into a deep connection with Him by faith. You come from death to life, because He is life (John 5:24; John 14:6). You come from darkness to light, because He is light (John 8:12). And that is a tenet of salvation.
The writer of Hebrews said that this salvation “was at first announced through the Lord and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him” (Hebrews 2:3). So in a way, listening to these words here, you are hearing the echoes of salvation. You are hearing the call of God to everyone to the ends of the earth. You are hearing the call about a new family that God is setting up.
A new family still coming from Abraham, because these people have the same faith as Abraham, who believed God and it was accounted to him for righteousness (Genesis 15:6; Romans 4:3). So you believe Jesus. You might say, “What is the will of God?” They asked Jesus, “What must we do to do the works of God?” He said, “This is the work of God, that you believe in the One He has sent” (John 6:28–29). That is the will of God—that you believe in the One He has sent, believe in Jesus.
So you have done the will of God through your belief in Jesus. You have now come from death to life. Remember what He said: “Whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother.” He is telling you it is about a new relationship. God is gathering people from all nations, and they are joining this new family of God. We are “members of the household of God” (Ephesians 2:19). We have a deeper connection.
Believe in Jesus, and you come to be part of His family. You become His brother and sister.
God bless you. See you later.
