Revelation 22:1–2: “Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, water as clear as crystal, pouring out from the throne of God and of the Lamb, flowing down the middle of the city’s main street. On each side of the river is the tree of life, producing twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit every month of the year. Its leaves are for the healing of the nations.”

This reminds you of the words of Ezekiel, where Ezekiel had a vision of a river flowing from the temple—water that makes things come alive, that makes things that are dead come alive (Ezekiel 47:1–12).

And you see here that, in a way, we are seeing a clearer picture of what Ezekiel saw, because this water is pouring out from the throne of God. So we can go to the words of Ezekiel and see the symbolism there and see that it is pointing at Christ. Ultimately, what Ezekiel was writing about, he was pointing to Christ.

And Christ, in a few places, talks about Himself in relation to water. He told the Samaritan woman, “If you had known the gift of God and who it is who said to you, ‘Give Me some water to drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water… the water that I will give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up to eternal life” (John 4:10–14). In John chapter 7, He said, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me, and let the one who believes in Me drink… From within him will flow rivers of living water” (John 7:37–39).

So when Jesus Christ talked about Himself and the Father, He said the two of Them are going to come and have Their place within you (John 14:23). And when you talk about the temple, Jesus Christ said, “Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up,” talking about the temple of His body (John 2:19–21).

And what are we? We are the temple of God; we are the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 3:16; 6:19). So, in a limited picture, we are talking about you and me being where God is going to dwell, and the water that will flow from us, that is outpouring from us, will lead to the healing of the nations.

There is no seasonal fruit here. It is constantly flowing; it does not end, because it is sourced from God Himself. It has no limitations. It has no constraint like the natural fruit we have on the earth where you say, “Okay, this one comes at this season and then it stops at another season.” But we know in all this, the aim of God is restoration.

The aim of God is healing. That is the agenda of God. He said, “The healing of the nations,” the restoration of the nations. And when He talked about nations here, He is talking about diverse people groups, wherever you are, however you are. So this is targeted at the healing of the nations, the restoration of the nations.

When the prophet Simeon held Jesus, he said, “My eyes have seen Your salvation” (Luke 2:30–32). And when you look at salvation, you know the focus of God is that His salvation is going to start pouring from Jerusalem—where Jesus Christ died, where Jesus Christ was buried—when the message of the gospel started being proclaimed (Luke 24:47; Acts 1:8). It started flowing from that place. The throne of God, Mount Zion in a figurative sense. It started flowing from that place, and the result has been restoration of people groups, restoration of people back to God, healing coming.

The wounding that was experienced because of man’s sin and departure from God, the wounding that was experienced because of the dominion of darkness and the oppressive reign of evil and the control of sin, the twistedness that comes from sin—there is a promised healing coming from God.

When you look at the book of Genesis, you see that there was a tree of the knowledge of good and evil that Adam and Eve ate, and there was a tree of life (Genesis 2:9). And God restricted access to the tree of life because He said He does not want them to live forever (Genesis 3:22–24). But now, because of Christ, we have eternal life (John 3:16; 1 John 5:11–12), and that begins our journey of healing.

That is healing. That begins our journey of healing. And He said on each side of the river is the tree of life. So what access was restricted to in the first chapters of the Bible, we have full access to it now as we come to the last chapter of the Bible.

And it is about God. It is about God's work. It is about God's work in people’s lives through Jesus.
