Psalm 84:10:
“Certainly, spending just one day in Your temple courts is better than spending a thousand elsewhere. I would rather stand at the entrance of the temple of my God than live in the tents of the wicked.”
I want to begin a miniseries that I call “The Value of Small Things.”
Look at this man. What is he going to be doing in the Lord’s temple? “Stand at the entrance.” What exactly are you even doing? “I’m just going to stand at the entrance.” I want to do even that little for God, with God, be with God in that way, serve God in that way, if that is what it entails.
Even the little ones.
“I’m not going to wait for the big bell to be rung for my name. I’m not going to wait for my name to be in a prominent place.”
Jesus said to some people, “You have little strength” (Revelation 3:8). Some of us just have little strength. He said, “You have little strength,” and He is saying, “You who have little strength—I am not giving you less attention than the one who has big strength. I see you. You who have little strength, I see you.”
The writer of Hebrews wrote that “God is not unjust so as to forget your work and the love you have demonstrated for His name, in having served and continuing to serve the saints” (Hebrews 6:10). And Jesus also said that the person who gives “even a cup of cold water” in His name will not lose his reward (Matthew 10:42).
Just something tiny. That is what I am talking about. The little service is valued.
Think of the woman who came to Jesus and poured expensive ointment on Him (Matthew 26:6–13; Mark 14:3–9; John 12:1–8). People said, “What is the point of this? You could sell that and do something more prestigious with it—give to the poor, everyone will know your name. Do something more strategic. Can’t you be more strategic?”
No. This was what was in her heart to do for Jesus, and she did it for Him. And Jesus said, “Wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her.”
Little thing. Just something little, right? You might say, “It is not so little; it was very expensive.” But I am saying that, in human estimation, we probably have zero value for what she did. But because she did it for Christ, for God, human logic cannot capture it.
Human logic cannot fully comprehend it. It does not matter—it is for God; God values it. And to show you He values it, He gives her a reward.
He says, “Behold, I am coming soon, and My reward is with Me, to pay each one according to what he has done” (Revelation 22:12).
The point is: let’s not despise little things that you are doing for God. Don’t despise the tiny thing.
And listen to this: He wants you not to do it for human accolades, but to be sure that He is looking at you.
Think of the widow who dropped her two small coins in the temple (Mark 12:41–44; Luke 21:1–4). It looks insignificant. “What is it going to do for us in this temple that you have brought this? It’s not adding to us. What are you doing saying you are giving this little money? Let’s be reasonable.”
But that is not the way God reasons. God values the little things.
God values the little things. God values the little ones. He said, “Let the little children come to Me… for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these” (Matthew 19:14).
We do not have any value for them. We do not have any regard for them. “What are they adding to you? They are only collecting and collecting and collecting.” But in the eyes of God, they are precious. They have not yet started working for them to “bring something to support the church,” right? But in God’s eyes, they are valuable.
So remember, I am focused on “The Value of Small Things.”
Let us begin to shift our minds, because the Bible says, “What is highly prized by men is detestable in God’s sight” (Luke 16:15). And God says, “My thoughts are not your thoughts, and your ways are not My ways” (Isaiah 55:8–9). That is a call for humility, for repentance, for us to embrace divine reasoning.
What you do not value, God values. What is so little in your eyes is not nothing in God’s eyes. And since you are doing it for His name, it is like you are investing in the eternal kingdom. The returns will be eternal as well.
God bless you. See you later.
